Game report

The first shot of the game belonged to Croatian Milicic, but the puck ended in the safety net. Also the very first power play went for the European team, but only two good shots were fired by Cunko and the Australian goalie had a clear view and saved. After a short break between the first two quarters, Australians shifted into another gear and after 6 minutes and 17 seconds scored 4 goals! Matija Milicic beat James in the Croatian net from the goal area, 2 and half minutes later Ivan Jankovic ran out from the opponent´s defense and alone in front of James knew what to do. Another half of a minute later, Matija Kopajic scored after his ground shot and then Ivan Novotny added the 4th goal after giveaway 2 on 1.

Australians learnt their lesson from the 2nd quarter and started the third one more carefully. At least, they tried to. However, the German referee gave Collins a minor penalty for holding the opponent and Croatian players had another chance to score. After killing this penalty, Australians tried to reach a contact goal as soon as possible, but Croatians were very comfortable in defending their own goalie. However, Australians converted their second power play into their 1st goal in this game by ground shot by Jordan Gavin. In the 38th minute, Kopatjic could get back a 4-goal-lead, but he was unsuccessful in his giveaway. When everybody was expecting an Australian pressure to reach a goal, Croatians were in front of James. Siseta fired behind his defender and hid the shot great, but James saved. And then, an up-and-down game part already started. 2 and half minute before the end, Luke Fritchley got a minor penalty for slashing and Australian chances for making the game tied semmed to be definitely off. After killing this penalty, Sean Jones made a little drama by scoring the second goal behind Tomljenovic back, but it wasn´t enough… Croatians thanks to the great part in the 2nd quarter, when they scored 4 goals, won the game.

Reactions

Stuart Philps (Australia): The first period was pretty good from our side, we played well. Likewise, we were successful in for-checking. Even our attack was not bad, because we controlled the puck. However, in the second part of the game we slowed down and Croats scored four times, so for this reason we have lost a well-played game.

Marko Sertic (Croatia): Today´s performance was excellent from our side and our victory greatly deserved. It was important that we played very disciplined and did not let the opponent get themselves into opportunities.
