Game report

Australia was caught daydreaming right at the start and the Slovenians took advantage of it. Two goals just sixteen seconds apart by Nejc Stolar and Matic Kralj gave the European team an early comrot lead.

Just as in the first period, also in the second one we saw an early goal against Australia. Matic Kralj scored his second one finishing a 2-on-1 breakaway between James‘ legs.

Sean Jones managed to decrease the gap when he got alone behind Slovenian defense and scored. However, Turner was called for tripping right after Jones‘ goal and Slovenia scored again. Even though it was after the powerplay Janez Iglicar got a nice pass from Frol and sent the puck precisely on right post.

Anyway, the Australians kept attacking and could celebrate in the end of third period. At first, Sean Jones scored from a 2-on-1 breakaway and then Cameron Todd scored the third one right before the last intermission. That was a fortunate shot from red line.

Despite the seven goals, the real goal feast was yet to come in the fourth period. Matic Kralj got his hattrick when he scored past disoriented James. Rok Simisic then scored another one against an open goal to put his team three goals in front.

Australia anwsered with Sean Jones‘ goal as the Australian finished his hattrick as well, but Slovenia scored again. Gal Koren tapped it in between James‘ legs. Sean Joneswas even able to score another one during a powerplay in the last minute, but it was Anze Lonear whose goal was truly the last one.

Reactions

Aleš Fajdiga (Slovinsko): We got in front quite comfortably, but then we slept through part of the game and the opponent pushed back. Fortunately, we won the game in the end. Important was the beginning, where we got the lead and our opponent didn’t manage to equalize it again.

Stuart Philps (Austrálie): In some parts of the game, we were really close to even the scoreline, but it just didn’t go our way. However, we skated well today and we caught the pace of the Slovenians. It was difficult to prepare, because they play different style of hockey than all the other teams.
