Game report

German players entered the game nicely. During Sjoren´s penalty, Baier sent a pass to Fabio Carciola who opened the score by a great shot. The game could be tied in the 4th minute, but Berglund hit only a post. Although Swedes didn´t punish Baier´s penalty for holding the opponent, they still made the game tied. One second before the first break, Dick Axelsson beat Eisenhut from firing from the left circle. And it wasn´t all. Shortly after the break, Swedes turned the score on their side. Henrik Hoglund skated to the middle of the zone and scored!

In the 17th minute, two great saves by Eisenhut hold German chances still on – German goalie beat in face to face battles Svensson and Nilsson. A tying goal was on a stick of Brazda, however, his giveaway was unsuccessful.

Shortly after the main break, Germans however managed to make the game tied. Pfleger sent a wonderful pass right on Huba Sekesi stick who couldn´t miss the empty net. And it could be even better for Germans, when Sekesi skated completely alone to the net, but Olikainen skated with him, lowered him the shooting ankle and at the very end, deflected the shot by his shoulder. However, he didn´t have to regret it for long. 40 seconds before the 3rd break, Marco Pfleger got a pass on the left circle and beat the Swedish goalie for the 3rd time!

Swedes got a good opportunity to score again, but German managed to kill Brandt´s penalty. Swedes also called off their goalie and tried to send the game into overtime and they were successful! The third “last minute´s“ goal by Hoglund meant, that both teams managed to get one point.

The overtime didn´t take long. Hoglund converted Carciola´s penalty into the winning goal, completed his hat-trick and Swedes could write down their first victory.

Reactions

Björn Östlund (Sweden): I feel good, because we have two points and hold the second place in our group. We didn´t play well, we only netted three goals in the regulation time, but maybe it was because German was so good and tough today.

Steffen Tolzer (Germany): It´s not easy to lose a game like this, especially when we were so close. But I think that we have nothing to regret, to be ashamed of. The game was decided in the last minute when we conceded unlucky goal, but this is a sport and we have to get over it. I believe we will get together and stay focused, because we played well and have something to build on.
