Breathtaking drama for Team Sweden

This was a game, which is totally worth it to see and also to play. A hundred percentage battle to the very last breath by Swedes and Canadians brought the audience 9 goals and a very close win for the Nordic team.

Game report

Canadian players made a great start. Swedish Robin Sjoren got a minor penalty for tripping and Thomas Woods converted this situation into the first goal. The second Swedish penalty was killed, and even better – after announcing of a full strength, Axelsson passed nicely to Robin Wall, who in face-to-face battle with Leggato didn´t give the opponent a chance. In the 10th minute, Christ Terry could write his name into the scorer´s column for the 2nd time, but he failed to beat Ollikainen, who deflected the puck with his glove.

Three big opportunities for Team Tre Kronor, and the last one ended by the 2nd goal. Although two good shoots by Svensson, it was Marcus Nilsson who found a way to beat the Canadian goalie by a wrist shot. However, Swedes couldn´t celebrate for too long, because 1 minute later, the game was tied again when Dave Hammond didn´t rush anything, waited for the best shot and fired precise behind the upper bar.

Shortly after beginning of the 2nd half, Swedes players were again one goal ahead, this time thanks to Mikael Eriksson and also a good work by Berglund. The success could be doubled, but Höglund only hit the left post of Leggato´s net. Although, Swedes could celebrate 30 seconds after. Dick Axelsson was found by Nilsson´s cross passed and fired precisely. Canadians lowered the leading of their opponent in a power play, when Terry passed to Wood, who was in a good speed and beat the opponent for the second time. The great battle continued. Swedes doubled again their leading in the 40th minute, when Nilsson took an advantage from Sjoren´s pass.

Canadians made a close call again in the 43th minute, when Dick Axelsson was fooled by Chris Terry and he stroke just above the goalie´s glove. Canadians tried to send the game into an overtime, called off their goalie, took a time-out, but Swedish made it and celebrated 3 points.

Reactions

Björn Östlund (Sweden): We played a very tough and emotional game which we luckily managed to win. We are happy for the second place in the group. We could see many many penalties on both sides, emotions are very difficult to control in these games.

Jason Stephens (Canada): Each game is an experience for the team to learn few new things about this tournament. Sweden definitely came out to play today. It seemed like pretty testy game in the start, but it settled into a really good game. We need to be more disciplined, in the second quarter we went to the penalty box four times and even our penalty killers did a great job tonight, discipline is a big thing for us right now.
