Game report

The audience of the battle for the gold had to wait for the opening goal till the 10th minute. Lohtander got the puck back and set up Petri Partanen who well knew what to do. After the goal Canada hit a post at the other end, then the puck was lying loose in the crease, Hovi couldn´t find it but no Canadian could get to it and it was finally cleared. The leading of the Nordic team was doubled in the 14th minute. Tomi Penttinen carried the puck into the Canadian zone, circled the net, and fired a low wrist shot that beat Leggat. Few moments later, another great opportunity for Finnish, but this time Leggat prevented a disaster. Canadians were rewarded for their effort by a contact goal in the 23rd minute. Dave Hammond had the puck at the top of the slot and fired over the shoulder of Hovi for a power-play goal.

After the main break, Team Canada made the game even tied when Chris Rauckman fired a rocket shot and beat the Finnish goalie for the second time. The joy of Canadians did not last too long. Because 40 seconds later, Northerners took the leading back when Petri Partanen scores his 2nd goal of the game with a wrist shot from the high slot that beat Leggat on the stick side. And finally, gold medals for Team Finland were ensured by the second power play goal in the 41st minute by Kari Lohtander. As the goal point of the end should be considered ex-Orli Znojmo Kim Stromberg´s third power play goal. Team Canada took its time-out and called off the goalie thirty seconds before the end, sent the fifth player to the field but all efforts were useless. Moreover, Joki-Erkkila was slashed when moving onto the empty net and referees called for a technical goal to seal the Finnish victory.

Reactions

Timo Nurmberg (Finsko): I feel great. We had an excellent team and there is a year´s work and a luck with nomination behind us. We hope to accomplish something like that also in the future. Everything has changed since last year, we have new players, new coaches and also a different result. Of course, we will want similar players also next year for Tampere, but we will see what happens. I think we may have more options when picking players, but it is difficult to change the winning team.

Jason Stephens (Canada): On this tournament we played two matches with Finland and have two losses. The reason is simple. They have the best team of all here, which they confirmed in the final match today and it is right that they didn´t lose a single game. Also we had less energy because we have won two matches after each other in the shootout. I want to thank to all my players for this tournament. I think that all of us can be satisfied.
