Game report
The Germans started better and took the lead in their first powerplay. Tim Brazda found a gap above Hovi’s shoulder to make it 1:0 and just one minute later, it was 2:0 as Marco Pfelger signaled pass to his teammate, but intsead scored with a hidden shot on short post.
Finland managed to answer immediately thanks to precise attempt by Mikko Pukka which ended right in the top left corner.
After the first intermission, Seifert almost scored during another German powerplay, but his stopped hit only the post. The Finns were more active than their opponent, but Ower was calm and ready, just as Hovi on the other side.
Therefore next goal wasn’t scored until the fourth period when Camilo Miettinen equalized from between the circles. This was the boost for Finland which soon scored another one. Ossi Pellinen found a gap beneath Ower and turned the scoreline around.
For more, Tomi Penttinen added fourth goal in half a minute while going alone against Ower. The Germans tried to fight back, but when Carciola was called for hooking, it was pretty much over. Mikko Pukka finished Finnish comeback into the game with a fifth one right at the end.
Reactions
Steffen Tolzer (Germany): We played well in defense, but we didn’t handle the end so well. We have a young team, which might be a factor. The Finnish were simply better in technique and skating. We have many players from the lower leagues so they’re not used to play on such a high level. When you are tired, you give away bad penalties and so good teams like Finland can punish you. We want to learn game by game. Two new players are coming to fill the gap due to injuries.
Timo Nurmberg (Finland): I wasn’t recognizing my players in the beginning. Our opponent played well and we had some troubles with them. I’m satisfied with our performance in the last quarter, where we turned it around in our favor. However, the Germans played a good game defensively. I’m glad we managed to win our group and now, we can look forward to the quarterfinal game.I wasn’t recognizing my players in the beginning.
